Cairns Racer Underwood Wraps Up Gladstone In Stallard
gmedia posted Friday February 27, 2009.
Just a quick update from the last round of the domestic series in Gladstone QLD Australia.
In our New Stallard, Built by Steve Caunt for the Victorian Presentation night last year,we are still running the same decals that were on it, We Started the weekend off with no new tyres as arranged so we grabbed some old ones and threw them in the trailer, Drove 1100 klms to Gladstone arriving to a heat wave with tempertures extreme.
The track looked moist as evidence of heavey showers during the week had turned infield into a boghole. We put a standard setup in to the car but raised the front a bit as it is a bit of a low drive track.
I Was out in heat two from the back and the track was an instant one laner with Iverson in front of me runnig a tight line passing wasn’t a option unless he made a mistake.
I sat on his rear the whole race until he had a engine problem causing him to slow, I rode his left rear and got airborne over his bonnet landing and continuing on with no damage.
Unfortunately gary hart in his aust 2 stallard behind me got Iverson squarely and his night was over. Finished heat in 5th.
Back in the pits, the crew were scratching their heads on what were we going to do to get more speed.
We tightened the car up more than we ever had before, our tyre problem wasn’t going to help but were determined to make do.
Out in heat 4 off the front row and don’t know how but was passed on the start from moller from the rear, i awaitd a restart but to no avail, Spent the rest of the race trying to pull him in but all cars seemed to be on par and didn’t make much ground.
Back in the pit the crew were happy with the car but I needed more, so we lowered the wing and moved it back.
Heat 6 and at the back again, but a good start as outside cars peeled high and the inside row held low I managed to go through the middle and into the lead.
Being in front its hard to gauge how your running against others but the car felt quick and wasnt till back in the pits later on the crew told me it just pulled away from the rest, close to half a lap lead apparently until a spin brought on the reds with two to run.
I Came first off the restart with Aust 2 stallard in second and shilleto in third.
Into the final from the back being high points man, No need to rush I thought as the track had been a one laner all night the plan was to keep it tight and wait for the gaps to open up.
All things went to plan as I had the car tight, everone was trying to pust that extra bit the field was just opening up.
I had managed to get on to bryce allens tail, he must have been on the same page as me as he was set up tight as well.
I Stuck my nose under him a couple of times but just couldn’t make it stick but as we fought for lap after lap we were peeling through the field.
After the restart my old tyre had, had enough and I fought to get temperature back in to it i lost momentum for about 2 laps then got back on the pace and got back on to the leaders.
By then Shaun and Kristin seemed to be getting a bit of push and Bryce and i managed to get under them both and put some distance in with a clear run to the finish.
I ran out of laps to have another go at bryce with him getting the deserving win however we had the points to secure the round win. WOW.
Not bad for the New Stallard Chassis, "we call it the presentation model" running a stock R6 motor.
